Message to Downing Street - make cycling safer for women

This October, thousands of women will join glow rides across the country, lighting up the night in support of Cycling UK's women’s safety campaign ‘My ride. Our ride’.

Taking our demands right to the Prime Ministers door, women from around the UK will deliver a letter calling on Andy Burnham to support safer streets and better cycle routes that feel safe and welcoming for everyone. Because too often, women are left feeling that the streets they ride on are 'Not Designed For Me', especially after dark.

Add your name to our letter today to make sure our message is heard loud and clear - no more having to choose between dark isolated paths and busy roads.

Dear Andy Burnham,

Cycling should give women a healthy, affordable and convenient way to make everyday journeys. But too often, concerns about safety prevent them from getting on their bikes.

Women make around half as many trips by bike as men and are more likely to be put off by busy traffic or harassment. This can prevent women of all ages from cycling to work, taking children to school, visiting friends or simply getting where they need to go.

Nobody should have to choose between a busy road and a dark, isolated underpass. This October, thousands of people will light up the night through mass glow rides, calling for streets and cycle routes that feel safe and welcoming for everyone.

As Mayor of Greater Manchester, you made bold changes to give people more ways to travel and create a fairer transport system. We urge you to bring that same ambition to the whole country, sending the message that we need better cycle routes for women.

Enabling more women to cycle would provide an affordable and healthy way to travel, help reduce congestion and make communities better places to live.

And if we make cycling feel safer for women, we make it safer for everyone.

For more than 140 years, Cycling UK has been inspiring people to ride. With your help, together we’re bringing about a real change. We’d like to keep in touch about the difference you’re making, our campaigning, cycling projects and volunteering opportunities, as well as events, marketing, and fundraising work. If you’re happy to hear from us please opt in.
